A Developing Philosophy
I come from a family with many nurses and I even remember hearing stories of my great-grandmother, in the Philippines, who was a sort of natural healer in her village. At the same time, there were teachers on both the Philipino and Yugoslavian sides of my family as well; and so education has always been a high value. I didn't realize it at the time, but as a growing teenager both of these influences had already started to shape my future career. I became a lifeguard and swimming instructor at age 16, and was involved in first aid response at my highschool.
Fast forward to my third year of university, when I stumbled upon a revelation, of sorts, that became the final influence to my career path. That revelation is this: The answer to everything is Balance. I know that this statement sounds extremely general and simple, but for me it holds true in basically every aspect of life - and particularly in terms of health and wellness. The balance of nutrition, exercise, relaxation and social and spiritual growth are all vital parts of our health; and, we need to maintain a balance of each of these, in our lives, in order to achieve optimal wellness.
That is why I chose to train in the field of Naturopathic Medicine. This medicine is fundamentally holistic in its approach and it takes all aspects of a person’s wellness into consideration. Naturopathic medicine also fundamentally instills the principle of "doctor as teacher" - because medicine is more than writing prescriptions, it's about empowering people in their own health.
Becoming a naturopathic doctor has been a culmination of the influences and values in my life and the challenge of doing so has been a natural progression in my growth as an adult. I am excited and honoured to be a part of this particular field of medicine. My hope is to help people realize their optimal health potentials while fostering the holistic values of health, well-being and, of course, balance”.
